Assuming that you have read my other articles on this subject of starting a blog, you are definitely going to need some plugins if you are going to go with a WordPress.org site, and here are the top five that I recommend and why.
This will be a fairly quick read compared to the others (thankfully, I know!). But this is very very important, so again, take note!
I am not paid for advertising these in anyway, these are just the top plugins that I have found immediately useful and important.
For Spam Protection.
It sounds weird, but this is just what you need! WordPress is a literal spam magnet, so you need to do something to protect yourself. And, the solution (or one of the solutions) is the main plugin used for spam protection – Akismet.
This is such a useful plugin if you are wanting to know how many people are coming to your site, from where, etc. Google Analytics software was included with my blogger site, but it was one thing I missed when I migrated to WordPress. If you need to know about your sites traffic, go download it! It’s sooo handy!
For Social Sharing.
If you want more than just a “pin it” meaning you want your readers to be able to share your posts with the world on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yummly, Digg, you name it, then this is your plugin. Again, fast and simple!
This is so so so so so important. Let me just make it plain and simple, just as much as WordPress is a magnet for spam, so also is it a magnet for intruders who will destroy your most precious creations! Don’t fall prey to that. Not only do you need a manual backup of your site, but also one of these simple plugins that give you stress free blogging:
For Site Backup.
This is the other most important one. If nothing else, you need blog security, spam protection, and backup protection! The services listed above will back up your site’s database and files so you can focus on simply blogging! No one wants to lose their masterpiece….protect your work with either the paid or free backup. As to which I prefer – I went to for the paid backup.
Of course I realize that there are other tools and plugins that your site will need, but I just wanted to get you started with the very basics. Everything else you choose to use will be based on what you would like to do with your site. Need a plugin to tell readers about related posts? Need a plugin for sending newsletters to subscribers? There are thousands out there. Hopefully the ones I have provided get you off to a wonderful start!
While getting plugins can be admittedly fun, and an easy way to manage your website’s needs, try to avoid getting too “plugin happy”. While some people stand beside getting as many as you need, the reality is that they are actually standing by you getting how many you want.
There is a difference between a want and a need, and you need to know the difference!
Please consider that while there are thousands upon thousands of free and premium plugins, you only need what you *need*. Deactivate and delete what doesn’t work, and only download plugins that are:
- Reputable/Trusted (the author and the product)
- Recently Updated (not old and outdated by years)
- Without Consistent Reviews/Complaints of Bugs/Bloat, Crashing, etc.
- With a purpose. Don’t download just to download!
When all else fails, have a professional see if they can work with your code for certain things. Certainly you don’t need a plugin for everything. So be smart, and enjoy blogging! Hopefully you have read my other resource section articles to get going smoothly!
